As I mentioned previously, I'm embarking on an effort to create a 1940 French wargame army in braille scale (I'll be using 20mm FAA figures primarily) and I could use some help with rank devices used by the Metopolitan Army in 1940. My plan is to assemble a complete infantry Platoon, a Infantry Company HQ (Command Platoon) and possibly some useful Battalion elements.
I was astounded to find that Osprey's two recently published Men-at-arms books on WWII French army don't provide a clear explanation of uniforms. Worse, they refer to their book on the WWI French Army for a discussion on rank insignia, then note exceptions! I would be happy simply to find a good reference. Also, I would really appreciate a picture of an officer's kepi (for wear in battle) from the top.
Here are a few questions:
- A platoon contains 3-4 different NCO ranks (Soldat 1re class, Corporal, Squad Sergeant and Platoon Sergeant (I'm not sure if the last two are different). How is each rank indicated? Is it indicated only on their left sleve? Is the Company Sergeant a different rank and if so how is it indicated? Are NCO rank insignia a small gold stripe or one that goes all the way around the sleve?
- Did Company grade officers typically wear their doe-colored trousers in battle? Did they wear their Red, blue, and gold kepis in battle too?
- Infantry leather equipment straps seemed to run from a lovely cordovan color to a pale tan. I'll appreciate color recommendations.

Those aren't NCOs (I understand NCO = sous-officier in the French army).

In the 1940 French infantry organization, a squad ( groupe ) would typically be led by a sergent , while a platoon ( section )would be lead either by a senior NCO (say an adjudant-chef ) or a lieutenant .

Yes, it's part of the campaign uniform.

They'd wear a helmet.
FWIW, the standard issue campaign uniform ("tenue N°5, dite de campagne" ) for COs was:
* headgear: "képi" or helmet. "bonnet de police" only when resting
* the khaki, 4-pocket jacket ("vareuse" ), with either old (closed) or modern (open) style of collar
* the light khaki shirt and tie (barely visible with old-style collar)
* the beige baggy trousers ("culotte mastic" )
* light brown gloves
* standard issue shoes ("brodequins" )
* either light brown leather leggins ("jambières" ), or French-style frabric leggings ("bandes molletières" ), either in khaki or (very often) beige.
* optionally, a khaki coat ("manteau de drap" ), different from the the trooper's ("capote" ).
Here's a typical lieutenant (I think) in the field (source unknown to me):
